The last boat leaves in three minutes.
The conductor checks your ticket, then checks your face. “You weren’t on the boat when I counted.” The paper in your hand is damp, although it was dry in your pocket. Outside, the lagoon is black glass.
The story
At 11:47 p.m., the last vaporetto pulls away from San Zaccaria. A conductor finds a wet paper ticket in your coat pocket. It is stamped for a stop that disappeared from the timetable years ago—and someone on board is waiting for you to notice.
What does “vaporetto” mean?
“Vaporetto” is the Italian name commonly used for a public passenger boat that works like a bus on the water. In Venice, vaporetti connect the city’s islands and stops across its canals and lagoon. The word comes from vapore (steam), reflecting the boats’ origins as steam-powered vessels.
